★ Poseidonia was once known as Della Grazia, named after the Catholic Church of Madonna de la Gratsia. It was eventually renamed Posidonia after the god Poseidon. Whatever its name, the town is known as an upscale resort area on the island of Syros. Its posh roots are still evident today as noted by the turreted mansions and lush gardens dotting the town. Its beauty attracts visitors to the beaches of Fetouri, Voulgari, and Komito. Posidonia is located at Foinikas Bay, just 10 km from Hermoupoli. ★

★ The island of Syros is in the heart of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. Many of the island's houses are built in the typical Cycladic style of architecture. You'll find some extraordinary mansions with turrets, museums, and various cultural events throughout the year.

Its largest city is also its capital: Ermoupolis and is about 15 km away. (Ermoupolis is one of the few places in the world where Orthodox and Catholic Christians celebrate Easter together.)  There is a casino, cinemas, and various restaurants to enjoy. From Ermoupolis, you can take a ferry to the nearby islands of Mykonos, Tinos, and Dilos.

Consider a visit to Agios Nikolaos Church in the Vaporia neighborhood. Its blue dome and fabulous icons are must-see, as are the Church of the Resurrection in Anastaseos and the Catholic Cathedral of Agios Georgios in Ano Syros.

The best way to get to the island of Syros:

A) You can fly to Mykonos International Airport and take the hour-long ferry to Syros. They run two to three times a day from Mykonos to Syros.

B) From Athens, you can take the nearby Pireas ferry which takes about 4 hours to get to Syros Island. ★
